The Marshfield Plainfield Broadband Internet Project is the product of a volunteer community group working to bring high-speed Internet service to our two communities. Our goal is a fast, affordable and reliable Internet for anyone who wants it - 10 to 20-times fast than dial-up service now available. We formed because larger telecommunications companies refused to provide this service to rural areas of Plainfield and Marshfield. We operate under the authority of the selectboards in both towns and do not rely on local tax dollars. Here's a list of committee members:
We've
recently selected, in a competitive bidding process, Cloud
Alliance to provide wireless Internet service to our communities.
Cloud Alliance, based in Island Pond, is a partnership involving
key players in the emerging rural Internet service market in
Vermont. Our commitee also receives technical support from Al
and Laura Duey of the Vermont
Council on Rural Development.
About the Project Radio waves are fast replacing wires as the carriers of Internet access. Cloud Alliance will use small, unobtrusive antennas and broadcast equipment mounted on utility poles, farm silos, or tall buildings in Plainfield and Marshfield. That equipment will send an Internet signal that a customer receives and uses with help from a small antenna mounted on the home. This wireless technology does not require the construction of tall towers like those used for cell-phone technology. Our goal is to provide Internet service to anyone who wants it. But the availability of service will grow gradually. It will begin in a few areas with high demand and expand over time. We also expect our project to eventually reach out toward Calais, East Montpelier and other nearby towns. We're now hard at work to begin the permitting and construction phase of the project. So, for now, please be patient as we continue our work. We'll keep sending you updates with more good news. |
